Alghero was founded by Genoeses in the 11th Century and had been governed from Doria Family for longtime; only for a short period from Pisano Family (1283-1284). First under Aragonese rule and later under Spanish domination, Alghero, since 1720, at the beginning of the sixteenth century, was fortified because of its important and strategic position in the Western Mediterranean Sea. Thanks to its natural position the town of Alghero became soon one of the most important trade cores in the Mediterranean Sea. When in 1720 Savoy Family took the governement of the town, the trade had an increasing developement, especially for what concerned Coral fishing activities. In 1862 Alghero's citizens founded the first seaside resort, symbol of the intense touristic activity of the town up to our days.
